What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. They are almost always benign and can range in size from nearly undetectable to very large masses that distort the uterus. Affecting as many as one in five women during their childbearing years, fibroids often shrink after menopause when hormone levels decline.

Understanding Fibroid Causes and Risk Factors

While the exact cause of uterine fibroids is unknown, their growth appears to be linked to female hormones like estrogen and progesterone. A genetic component may also play a role, as fibroids often run in families. Other factors that can increase risk include age, obesity, and ethnic origin.

Benefits of Seeking Fibroid Care

Alleviate Pain and Pressure

Effective treatment can significantly reduce the chronic pelvic pain, lower back aches, and abdominal pressure caused by fibroids. This leads to greater physical comfort and the ability to move through your day with ease.

Control Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

A primary benefit of treatment is the normalization of menstrual flow, reducing heavy and prolonged bleeding. This helps prevent complications like iron-deficiency anemia and restores energy levels.

Reduce Bladder and Bowel Symptoms

As fibroids shrink or are removed, the pressure they exert on the bladder and bowels is relieved. This can resolve issues such as frequent urination, urinary urgency, and constipation.

Receive a Personalized Treatment Plan

Working with a specialist allows for the creation of a treatment strategy tailored to your specific symptoms, fibroid characteristics, and health goals. This ensures your care is aligned with your needs.

Improve Overall Quality of Life

By effectively managing disruptive symptoms, you can regain control and confidence. Successful treatment allows you to fully participate in work, social engagements, and personal activities without interruption.
